ACCIONA, through its Water Division and a joint venture with the Brazilian company GEL, has completed building work on the sewerage system in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, in the Brazilian State of Pernambuco (Brazil). The system is currently in the phase of assisted operation.
The system, designed to handle a flow rate of 360 litres per second, will provide a service to 196,000 people up to 2037, as per growth forecasts for the local population. The project includes a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), four wastewater pumping stations with their associated pipework, and 17.8 kilometres of interceptor mains with 187 manholes.
Almost 10,000 m³ of concrete and 840,000 kilograms of steel have been used for the structure of the WWTP project and the pumping stations. Pipe diameters between 150 and 1000 mm have been applied in the 17.8 kilometres of pipework.
The WWTP and the pumping stations have a control and monitoring system for the water treatment process, as well as a laboratory to analyse the quality of the treated effluent. All the units have an active carbon odour treatment system, with the aim of ensuring the well-being of the communities located near the WWTP and the pumping stations.
The project has a budget of approximately R $ 99 million (€ 16.5 million), including engineering management, construction work, as well as technical assistance to the operation of the plant for one year.
The project, part of the Water Sustainability Plan for Pernambuco (PSHPE), has received funding from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and represents a major environmental contribution to the Capibaribe River basin and the quality of life and health of the local population.
